<image:title>Meg Murphy - Hi it’s me Meg and I’m a board member for Rhys Above. I’m here for Rhyland. That’s the short of it. Our neighborhood is the closest suburban thing to the group parenting hippie commune I always imagined myself raising children in… and Downingtown really is this nostalgic small town heaven. We all have each other’s backs here. We look at all our neighborhood kids as our own, and when we lost Rhyland we lost a piece of our whole that we just can’t ever get back. I’m here to help hold up his piece. I’m here to save space for him.</image:title>
<image:caption>In those dark days immediately after Rhyland died, trying to help Jen and James hold their grief, I remember what really overwhelmed me was the feeling of how much Rhyland carried without any of us knowing. I remember his smile and his laughter, and my own kids looking up to him, and I remember thinking how utterly impressed I was that he put on such a brave face for all of us. And how utterly devastated I was that he put on such a brave face for all of us. And don’t I know what that feels like? Don’t we all, really? Know what it’s like to swallow our dark parts and put on a smile? Keep one foot in front of the other and try not to let anybody down? It’s hard. It’s hard to be brave and optimistic and it’s hard to be vulnerable and terrified. I’m here because I am all of these things. I’m here because I think most of us are. I’m here to make sure my babies - which, if you know me, you know this means literally all of the babies- grow up with safe spaces and mental health curriculum and access to therapy and whole and complete acceptance regardless of who they are and where they are and what they’re feeling. And I’m here to make sure it’s fun. And authentic. And really freaking badass. Because that’s who Rhyland was, and we aren’t gonna sap out on him.</image:caption>

Although I knew it was always a problem with adolescents, my girls opened my eyes greatly to the struggles of these children as they become young adults. I’m hoping to increase the conversation of mental health in the elementary years as well, instead of waiting until the teenage years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kristina Bowen - Hi, Kristina Bown, board member for Rhys Above. It is ever-present that the world that we now live in is a lot harder on our children. As an educator, I have always had a passion for watching students thrive. I see kids that struggle mightily in school, but there are many more that are dealing poorly with the constant stress and pressure of a life that is more difficult than any math problem.</image:title>
<image:caption>With increasingly more societal pressure bubbling over for today’s youth, the amount of our support needs to increase as well. After all of the talking that we do about the kids of today, it is time for us to start listening. Their formative years are not the same as ours. We need to recognize this and work to change the perspective. With my role in Rhys Above, I relish the opportunity to bring about change that benefits the future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dan Wilson - Hi, Dan Wilson, President of the Rhys Above Board of Directors. As someone who has battled since middle school some form of anxiety and or depression, I know how lonely it can feel when things seem most bleak. While I consider myself to be an incredibly personable and most often a well-adjusted and happy person, I still find myself in periods of sadness and anxiety.</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was younger, I got in some trouble that really exacerbated that sadness and anxiety. My mother learned from her MD father, as a teen, that mental health practitioners were quacks and that anyone has the ability to pull themselves out of depressive times. Needless to say, that was bullshit, but it was what she believed then and because of that I wasn’t allowed to seek help for my sadness. Over the course of my childhood and into adulthood, I learned how to cope with many of the issues that affect me; however, as my mental health became more erratic I knew I needed to seek professional help. As an adult, I have sought help from others and it has greatly impacted my ability to get by. I sit as President of the Board of Directors of Rhy’s Above because I know the pain and loneliness that one can feel, battling depression and anxiety and never want a child - or another adult for that matter - to feel alone and have to suffer through pain silently. Mental health issues are real and for many of us, can't be addressed or even solved without the aid of medication or greater support systems. I am committed to helping people see that being sad is ok and that there is no shame in asking for help. No one should feel alone in this battle, especially not our children.</image:caption>

<image:title>Denise Trigo - Denise Trigo, Rhy’s Above Board of Directors Secretary. In life, a person meets all types of people. I know you may have heard this before. But it is true. Some people you know for a lifetime, some for a shorter time. Some nurture you, some strengthen you. I am sure you are already trying to figure out which type Rhyland was for me. Well, he was the type who made me grow.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many consider me a laid back person, and for the most part I am. But Rhyland had this innate ability to push my buttons. It felt like almost a game sometimes he created, because whenever he found a button that frustrated me, he seemed to be smirking. It wasn’t because he didn’t care about me, because I believe if he didn’t care he wouldn’t have even tried. And sometimes, like last year, when I was working hard on me and would post a workout on Snapchat, he also would respond to my snap with a simple, “Way to go Mrs. T.” He cared! A lot! Maybe too much! His loyalty to his friends was beyond. I will not go into the ways that I saw he helped some friends because some of those stories are personal to them and/or me. But just know he was loyal. He would use humor to calm down situations, even if those involved were not his friends. He was a good friend to my son. I am here because a bright light like Rhyland should never go out. I wish he reached out more. I wish I had reached out more. I wish he would have let us into the darkness he felt so we could hold his hand and lead him back to the light. Sometimes I was hard on him because I cared. Did he realize that? I don’t know, but I wish I could go back and be clear about that. I am here because I want anyone who is stuck in that darkness to scream out for help. I want them to know that people care more than they know. I want them to talk and I want others to listen. But most of all I want us all to work together to take the stigma out of talking about how we feel. I want to guide others out of the dark and into the light.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jennifer Moore - Jennifer Moore, Executive Director, Rhy’s Above . On April 19th, 2021, my son Rhyland lost hiss battle with mental health. To say his loss is the single most devastating experience of my life would be a tragic understatement. Knowing the overwhelming darkness that lead him to that place, eliminating his will to live, is near tied. Uncovering the stigma around mental health that waylaid my son from admitting just how much he needed help and receiving the benefits of treatment is a close second.</image:title>
<image:caption>Rhyland’s beautiful soul touched the lives of everyone he met. Brave. Bold. Funny. Loyal. Fit. Intelligent. Kind. I could go on for hours. He filled our lives with joy, laughter, and something a bit unidentifiable in its uniqueness. Geuninely someone you just wanted to be around. Lover of animals. Creative ambassador. Protector of those he loved and diffuser of bully’s. The story’s I’ve heard since his passing of how he touched the lives of those around him both warm my soul and bring me to my knees. The fact that his light went out at the age of just 14 still doesn’t feel real. I started Rhy’s Above to end the stigma. To provide resources, community connection, and education in hopes that one day no parent, friend, or loved one will have to experience the pain of loss to suicide. It’s time to change the conversation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Czarlene Benner - Hi, I’m Czarlenne Benner, Rhy’s Above Board Member, friend and neighbor of Jen & James. I’m here for Rhyland, my kiddos, and all the kids struggling out there, even the ones that aren’t but be might one day! The thing is, the pandemic brought our neighborhood together in a way that wasn’t there before. When Jen & James lost Rhyland, we all felt the loss like he was our own child. I just started to get to know Rhyland during the early days of the pandemic. He seemed so happy whenever I saw him… always being polite, silly, goofy, carefree and just overall being a “kid,” but like many, he held it in and didn’t talk about it. If you know me, you know, the truth is, “I don’t want to talk about it.” It feels like nobody does and that’s a big part of the problem.</image:title>
<image:caption>Like many, I’ve experienced my own struggles with mental health challenges throughout various periods in my life. Even when you’re “doing good,” when you’ve hit the lowest of the lows, your subconscious is acutely aware that you’re potentially one setback away from crisis. It colors your experiences. Your friendships. Your life... and when you do “talk about it” the feedback is often, how others have it worse than you. You have a great life, what do you have to feel sad about? And that shutters the door to conversation. To healing. Once upon a time, I was a teacher. On the daily I watched brilliant, compassionate children struggle. Toeing the delicate balance of knowing I am only one person and not their parent while providing social and emotional learning, compassion, and everything within my power to help them succeed. At the same time, I’m aware that the way kids hear their parents can be different than what they take away from other adult role models and did my best to be a bright encouraging light in their day. We all have our moments though. Hours upon hours were spent working towards building confidence, resiliency, and coping skills for the toughest moments. Lofty goals you never really know if you’ve achieved especially teaching young children. Necessary parts of learning still debated at school board meetings today. Now I’m a full-time stay-at-home mom, volunteer, and child advocate. Today I see our nation’s youth, particularly in Downingtown, struggling at an unprecedented level. And not enough people want to talk about it. You might ask, why talk about it? What does talking about it actually do? First, access to therapy is limited by a number of factors unique to each individual, not to mention waiting lists months long. However, the shame and stigma associated with mental health, reaching out, asking for help is listed as the number one blocker to treatment. Youth mental health has been declared a crisis by numerous organizations. Read a few of our Executive Directors blogs to learn more. Or really, just google it. In the end, I still “don’t want to talk about it.” But here I am. Showing up. Talking about it. Because my children, your children, the next generation, means enough to me to admit that it’s ok to not be ok and it’s about time we talked about it and help each other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Koda Lei - Woof! Koda Lei, Rhyland’s Bernese Mountain Dog. I turned 5 years old in 2022 and got my first job as the O-ficial Rhy’s Above mascot. That same year I completed the beginning of my therapy dog training. Now, when mom pulls my pack out I know it’s time to go to work. I’m so excited I can hardly contain it, giving mom a good tigger bounce to let her know I’m ready to go do the therapies! Rhy always told mom, “Pet Koda mom, you can’t be sad when you' pet Koda” and he’s woofin’ right!</image:title>
<image:caption>Becoming a therapy dog is how I chose to honor my best friend. I love him so, so much. When Rhyland went away I waited by the door and barked really loud when he should be home. I paced and cried, and begged mom and dad to take me out to find him. After a while I just laid around and didn’t bark anymore. I wouldn’t even go outside. But then mom saw how excited I got every time one of my besties besties came over and she asked me if I’d like to be a therapy dog. I didn’t know, so I just wagged my tail and she took me to the BVSPCA for a test. The test was all about being a good boy and I’m great at that - I got so many treats! After that mom said I could be Rhy’s Above mascot and all these people wanted to pet me and that made me happy. Happier even than the treats mom brings when I’m the goodest boy. I love people more than anything. So mom said we could train together and being Rhy’s Above therapy dog’s been the bestest thing ever. Lots of hoomans need dogs like me and I need them too. I just can’t wait to see you out in the community. I’m a big boy but don’t let that stop you. Please come by and give me pets and I’ll do my best to make you happy. And if you like, you can tell me I’m the goodest boy. Rhy’s Above doesn’t incur costs on my behalf, but if you want to donate to help us end the stigma of mental health, you can do that here. You can even make it an automated monthly treat, woof! Hope I see you real soon!</image:caption>

<image:title>Matt Bodle - Hi, Matt Bodle, board member of Rhy’s Above. As a teacher, my “Why” is as straightforward as it gets - the kids. The ones I refer to as “my kids” even if I haven’t seen them in years; the ones I worry about constantly, even under what we would consider normal circumstances. My relationships with my students and the community are what keep me moving forward personally, and I could not possibly pass on the opportunity to join a board of such highly motivated and passionate individuals. I had the pleasure of teaching Rhyland when he was in fifth grade. I saw a kind, energetic kid with a tremendously bright future ahead. And then there’s that smile - the type of smile that you can never forget if you spent any amount of time with him. I was also fortunate enough to be able to catch up with Rhyland a few times after he left our school, and I was always impressed with how mature he was becoming as a teenager. I loved that he would always be one of the first to come over and say hi when he saw me - certainly not high on every teen’s list of priorities, but absolutely indicative of the type of person Rhyland was. For me, it was the little things that would always highlight his thoughtfulness and caring. Teachers, especially those at the elementary level, are “fixers” by nature. We always have the answer, the extra pencil, the band-aid, the smile. Even if it’s not perfect, we can figure out a way to make things work and love nothing more than when things are flowing smoothly in our little corner of reality. When the news broke of Rhyland’s passing, for the first time in my adult life, I couldn’t be the fixer I wanted to be. The immediate, visceral feelings of ears ringing, nausea, tears were soon replaced with the nightmare helplessness of having no idea what to do next. I was not prepared for how losing Rhyland would affect me as a person or as a teacher. Hell, I wasn’t even prepared for how I was going to get out of bed and try to face my students, some of whom had just lost a neighbor and a friend, with any enthusiasm the following morning. Since that Monday, my perspective on what it means to be part of a school and part of a community at large has undergone a massive shift. It is time to address mental health and teen suicide by creating meaningful dialogue in our own lives and on a community level, providing access to resources and programming, and educating youth and families. A tough conversation now can save a thousand down the road.</image:title>
